Boxez

A game made for the Lowrezjam 2024 game jam.

The current version is just a short demo, I tried to fit a few optional themes like Peaceful and All Systems Have Broken.

This game will be open sourced and will be available on GitHub.

Tips and Notes

  • The Merger can merge any shapes, even if they overlap.
  • The Merger can mix paints in an additive way (red + green = yellow, yellow + blue = white).
  • The paint works for already painted boxes as well, the colors will mix additively.
  • The Merger building needs two inputs on its two slots, if one slot is occupied it will block further boxes/paints from entering until the other slot receives a box/paint. If you destroy the building in this state (with only one slot used) the box/paint will be stuck on the map. This is a bug and unfortunately you can't fix it in the game. (I will upload a new version with this fixed.)
  • All the buildings can accept a box/paint from any direction but will output to the front, it works like a belt (in fact, there is a belt under the building that goes towards the front).

Really enjoying this.  I do have a problem where some of my boxes are getting stuck when going into the merger, and then deleting the merger leaves behind the stuck block, which becomes a permanent obstacle.  Guess it's just an increased challenge?

Thank you, I am glad you liked it! Yes, there is a bug with that, I think I found the solution and will ask the game jam organizers if I can upload a fix for that. If not then I'll post a separate game. Thanks for reporting it!

Nice little factory sim! I got confused with the merger - I couldn’t figure out how to get the grey and green boxes to fit inside; they kept stopping just outside the structure. I liked the slow introduction of mechanics!

Thank you Fletch, I am happy you liked it! The merger needs the two parts from two different belts, it should merge them even if they would overlap. If you tried that way then please post a screenshot so I can try to find the problem.

Here’s my screenshot :) I’ve tried to direct the green and grey onto the same line, but the merge accepts 1 green item and everything else backs up so nothing can enter the machine.

I think, the belt coming with the box should also go to the right, into the merger. If you had the belts going in other directions before it might be possible that a green paint is in the upper slot and the box should go to the bottom one (I wanted to add an indicator for occupied slots, I'll revisit this*), or that the paint is stuck somewhere in the middle, though I could not reproduce the issue (I will update it to have the component snap to a slot*)... Could you please start over and connect them in straight lines? I hope that solves the issue.

* I will keep the jam version as is and will post a separate game with the updates.

I see! I was mixing belts when I shouldn’t be. I was able to progress through the game with that knowledge! Thanks for helping me understand! I’ll update my rating to match <3 Wonderful job with this game, I love little puzzle automations like this.
